Hangzhou lies at the southern end of the Grand Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as its the world's longest, connecting the city to Beijing. The heart of the city is West Lake, surrounded by shrines, old bridges, and pagodas. Everything is lit up at night, offering spectacular views. Other highlights include Yu Fei Temple, built to honor a famous general in 1221, and the Lingyin Temple, known for its many depictions of Buddha carved into stone.
