Much of Hannover's attraction lies in the historic House of Hannover, the royal line. They had a variety of palaces and gardens built for them, the most famous being the Herrenhäuser Gardens. Highlights include the Great Garden, the Berggaten, and the Georgengarten, all of which offer very different things, from palaces to museums to greenhouses. There are also two town halls (the old and the new), as well as the Maschsee, a 78-hectare man-made lake that is a site for watersports and cultural events.
