Nuremberg is a city with a long history, dating back to its status as the unofficial capital city of the Holy Roman Empire. The Kaiserburg, built on a sandstone cliff overlooking the Altstadt (Old City), was the meeting place of the imperial courts of the Holy Roman Empire. Of Note is the circular 14th-century Sinwell Tower, which has an observation deck that lets visitors see the city below. Both the St. Sebaldus Church and the St. Lorenz Church have origins dating back to the 13th century and are filled with art. Lovers of art with a curiosity about the German people will enjoy the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, as it contains not only works of art by the likes of Albert Dürer but also artifacts including scientific and musical instruments, clothing, toys, armor, and other artifacts closely tied with German history. Unfortunately, in the 20th century, the city became synonymous with the Nazi Party, as they attributed a special status to the city due to its history with the Holy Roman Empire. The town was the site of many rallies, and the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds was intended to be a congress hall. Today it contains an exhibition on everything having to do with the regime. At the same time, the Justizpalast is the site of the Nuremberg Trials, where captured Nazi leaders were prosecuted in the aftermath of the war.
