Shiva, the Indian god of war, is a well-revered figure in the Hindu religion. Roughly 10 kilometers from Mumbai is Elephanta Island, home to cave temples mostly dedicated to Shiva (although some of the caves are also dedicated to the Buddhist religion). A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the caves feature sculptures carved from stone and are magical, as they date back to the 2nd century.

For those interested in modern Indian art, the National Gallery of Modern Art in Bangalore features an extensive collection by Raja Ravi Verma, Jamini Roy, and many others. Not only does the gallery host exhibitions, but it features workshops and seminars as well.
